Todos Santos Chocolates and Confections
Sena Plaza Courtyard
125 E. Palace #31

Todos Santos carries house made creations including truffles, toffee and gold or silver covered chocolate Milagros as well as eclectic confections from around the world. I took more pictures there on my first visit than I do of my grandchildren who I love even more than chocolate.

FAVORITE DESSERTS AT FAVORITE RESTAURANTS

Luminaria

If I could repeat only one chocolate experience in Santa Fe, it would be the chocolate truffles at Luminaria in the Inn and Spa at Loretto. They would go in my own personal Hall of Fame.  I had a chance to meet Andrea Clover, the pastry chef who created this culinary wonder. She graciously spent a few minutes with me the day before four weddings and Father’s Day. And when I requested chocolate for a photo, she brought out some chocolate turtles. I am pretty smart, if I do say so myself. At least when it comes to chocolate.

I also tasted some chocolates she made for an evening event. I would love to be her personal taste tester. She is a genius of chocolate.

Mexican Chocolate Streusel –Mexican Chocolate Cake with a Streusel topping served warm and topped with roasted Banana Ice Cream. Surprise ingredient in the streusel was a touch of chili. The chili in the streusel is classic Northern New Mexican derivation from the Aztec’s – they made a hot chocolate with chili.

Body

This is the go-to place for raw and organic chocolate. I would recommend everything I tried except the chocolate hemp cookie—it was dry and crumbly (sort of what you would expect healthy chocolate to be like) But everything else was creamy and smooth and richly chocolatey.  Maybe I am just too old for hemp.

El Paradero Bed & Breakfast Inn

You have to stay here to taste the yummy chocolate chili brownies. But that is just one of the many good reasons to stay at Paradero. Afternoon tea changes every afternoon—but seems to always feature the Chili Chocolate Brownies.

Inn on the Alameda

Everyone knows the best way to start the day is the with Chocolate. Mexican thought chocolate was the food of the gods, but at Inn on the Alameda, the  bountiful complimentary breakfast includes chocolate croissants. Okay, they don’t make them there—but they sure know where to buy them.

Dessert Divas

Who would expect to find world class chocolate in the middle of a flea market in an old horse racing site? Not me, so I was sort of surprised when a friend raved about the chocolate. Rave was an understatement. Amazing blends of chocolate and chili's that reflect the Southwestern Influence.  Rattlesnake Bites  – the Divas' own fudge truffle Ancho chili brownie topped with cream, roasted nuts, bittersweet chocolate chunks & then her signature toasted pepitas.  Watch out for the spicy ‘bite’….  This one will sneak up & get you when you’re not looking!

Rattlesnake bites are the perfect souvenir. If you can get them home without eating them all.

Shopping

Everyone suggests Canyon Road and the Indian market on the Plaza. Finding a bargain is a little tougher. I needed a strap for my sunglasses (very necessary) and I stopped in to Dressman’s Gifts on the Plaza. Family owned and operated since 1952 they sell authentic Indian jewelry and curio., I bought a colorful woven strap for two dollars. I saw them other places for five dollars and more. I would trust them for small souvenirs.

I think the Inn and Spa at Loretto might be the true epi-center of shopping. There are gorgeous stores with unique but pricey items, but if you step outside the door, you will find vendors selling many craft items. Probably not authentic, but the prices are realistic. Since they are just off the square, even the indoor shops nearby are less expensive

I always go to the Tesuque Flea Market and found some treasures at the newer flea market at the Downs. My best purchase this trip was an antique button necklace for $20.

Want to be an Artist?

Artists flock to Santa Fe for the light and cultural inspiration. Internationally known clay artist Heidi Loewen offers classes for all levels, including beginners. Her specialty is wheel throwing. Heidi glazes your work and ships it back to you. The best souvenir-schedule a private class for $150 an hour per person. She will teach anytime you want to schedule. Near the O’Keeffe Museum. 315 Johnson Street, Santa Fe.

When to go

There are four distinct seasons in Santa Fe including snow during the winter in the city. The hottest month is June when temperatures reach into the mid to upper nineties. The daily temperature typically changes 30 degrees due to the city's elevation and cool evenings. Normal rainfall is 14 inches a year. I often try to coordinate my visit with one of the many festivals going on.

How to get there

American Eagle’s non-stop service to and from DFW and Los Angeles to Santa Fe uses the 44-seat Embraer ERJ-140 jet. The $20 million aircraft cruises at 500+ mph and 40,000 feet..

“We are very pleased to connect Santa Fe, the New Mexico Airport of the Year,  to the network of  250 cities in 40 countries of American Airlines and it’s oneWorld alliance partners”, according to Daniel Heath, Managing Director of Marketing & Sales for the American Airlines Regional Network.

The Santa Fe Municipal Airport was recently upgraded to handle regional jets like the Embraer and was voted "Airport of the Year" by the New Mexico Airport Managers Association in 2009. The airport is located on the southwestern edge of the city, about a 20-minute shuttle ride into historic downtown. Rental cars are also available.
