Caribbean's First Tennis Academy
Occidental Hotels & Resorts teams up with legendary Argentinean tennis
star, Guillermo Vilas
Occidental Tennis Academy by Guillermo Vilas opens at
the Occidental Club On The Green Hotel in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
Occidental Hotels and Resorts, a leader in Caribbean
travel, and famed Argentinean tennis star Guillermo Vilas opened the
Caribbean’s first tennis academy, “Occidental Tennis Academy by Guillermo
Vilas,” at the Occidental Club On The Green Hotel in Puerto Plata, Dominican
Republic.
Situated on the
northern coast of the Dominican Republic, adjacent to the beautiful beaches
of Playa Dorada, Occidental Club On The Green Hotel was selected by Mr.
Vilas as the site of the first tennis academy that bears his name. The
“all-inclusive” resort consists of 386 duplex suites spread among 45 villas
on over 17 acres of lush green gardens with magnificent views of the 18-hole
golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones. Each suite features satellite
TV, telephones, spacious bathrooms, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, in-room
safes, and balcony. Guests can enjoy fine and casual dining in one of the
many restaurants and bars, featuring Caribbean, Spanish, Brazilian, or
Italian fare. In addition, the resort offers seven splendid tennis courts
for day or night play and state-of-the-art practice equipment.
Guillermo Vilas,
Argentina’s most successful tennis player, was born August 17, 1952 in Mar
del Plata, Argentina. During his illustrious career, Mr. Vilas won 61
titles while reaching 42 tournament finals. In 1977, he became the top
ranked men’s player after defeating Jimmy Connors at the U.S. Open. Mr.
Vilas won four grand slam singles tournaments, including the French Open and
U.S. Open in 1977 and the Australian Open in 1978 and 1979. In addition to
his long streak of victories and successes, Mr. Vilas was instrumental in
bringing tennis to the forefront in Argentina, which previously viewed
tennis as a sport for the elite. As a tribute to its native son, Mr. Vilas’
trophies, tennis rackets and other memorabilia now sit in a museum in his
hometown of Mar del Plata, Argentina.
At the academy, Mr.
Vilas and his team of instructors will offer classes to guests of the resort
and to the three other neighboring Occidental properties - Occidental
Allegro Jack Tar Village Puerto Plata, Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada, and
Occidental Grand Flamenco Puerto Plata. The academy will provide a wide
range of instruction from beginning tennis classes for children, teenagers
and adults to high yield programs for experienced players who want to raise
their game level - instructed personally by Guillermo Vilas or by his
professional staff.
