The Coastal Challenge
Two New Categories: Relay and Team
The
Coastal Challenge, the Expedition Run slated for January of 2005 in Costa
Rica, announced today the addition of both relay and team category for the
inaugural Expedition Run in Costa Rica. Although the primary focus of The
Coastal Challenge will remain on those solo competitors who take on the
entire distance, they also want to open this unique event up to a broader
spectrum of runners. "This will allow even casual runners the opportunity to
strongly consider participating in the experience of a lifetime. They can
find some friends and split the race days up between them. Now there is no
excuse to stay home, no reason not to "take on the Adventure" and see parts
of Costa Rica that only a handful of travelers have ever visited", says Race
Director Tim Holmstrom.
Solo participants will have the unique opportunity to
make the 250 kilometer adventure down the coast and truly RUN in a race
against the clock and in a field of worthy competitors. This will also be in
the only category where there is an opportunity to win the $20,000 prize
purse.
Within the relay category, teams may consist of 2 to 4
team members. Each stage the team selects one individual to take on the
challenge. That team member that is selected will represent the team time
for that stage. Each member on a relay team must run at least one stage.
Within
the team category, teams may also consist of 2 to 4 team members. Teams are
ranked according to the team average -individual times of each member
divided by the number of team members.
This is an extraordinary opportunity and an ideal venue
for runners from all backgrounds and skill levels to compete alongside one
another in their respective categories. The remote Pacific Coastline, quiet
coastal towns and verdant tropical rainforest will provide both varied and
breathtaking backdrops each day.
