Brazil Knows How To Shake Their Booty

TITAS Kicks Off 21st Season With Bale Foldlorico Da Bahia

Edited by Madelyn Miller

“Exuberant and virtuosic.” –The New York Times

TITAS opens their 21st season with the Brazilian troupe Balé Folclórico da Bahia on September 25th and 26th at 8:00 PM at SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium.  Balé Folclórico da Bahia gives a exuberant and electrifying performance based on Bahian folkloric dances of African origin including slave dances, capoeria (a form of martial arts), samba and carnival.

“In a spectacular display of color, movement, music and drama, Balé Folclórico Da Bahia proved that the famous north-eastern state of Brazil doesn’t just produce great singers…” -Chicago Sun-Times

Balé Folclórico da Bahia, the only professional folk dance company in Brazil, is a troupe of 38 dancers, musicians, and singers who present the region’s most significant exposition under a contemporary theatrical vision. Walson Botelho and Nonho Reis formed the troupe in 1988 and under the artistic direction of Jose Carlos Aranida they have received the Fiat Prize, awarded to the best dance companies in Brazil and earned a prestigious reputation for their thrilling performances. For more information about the troupe, visit www.balefolcloricodabahia.com.

“Fireworks and feats from Brazil. Turn off the electricity; the dancers of Balé Folclórico da Bahia power the show.” -The Orange County Register
