Perkins Cove: An Artist’s Haven

By Allyson Murray

For centuries artists have been lured to the charismatic fishing village of Perkins Cove located on the southeast coast of Maine. Beth Ellis, who owns a gallery located in Perkins Cove, is no exception. Her paintings, Harbor Brights and Walking The Marginal Way are wonderful examples of east coast landscape while Father and Daughter show a special moment of bonding between the pair. On the day I visited her gallery, Beth had just come in from painting on the beach while I was contemplating which painting to buy. She could tell I was having trouble deciding so she explained to me about each of the paintings and how she decided to paint that particular subject. If you are interested in Beth’s work, stop by her gallery or visit her website www.bellisart.com

A different form of art you can find in Perkins Cove is jewelry making. The Seaglass Jewelry Studio specializes is crafting one of a kind pieces of jewelry from sea glass found on local beaches. Once back at the studio, the artist carefully arranges the glass in a pre designed setting creating a unique piece each time. The most discerning shopper will appreciate the work done by these local artisans. You may contact the studio at info@seaglassjewelrystudio.com

Culinary Arts

Perkins Cove also has several fine restaurants. The Oarweed Restaurant is a wonderful choice. Ask for a table by a window overlooking the water so while you are feasting on lobster you have a mesmerizing view of the Atlantic Ocean. The restaurant does not have air conditioning but you will be to busy savoring every morsel that you won’t mind the heat. The Oarweed Shore Dinner is a bargain, it includes sweet clam chowder, a tasty lobster weighing in at 1 1/4lb and dessert. Even a seasoned New Englander will be pleased with the delectable array of seafood served at the Oarweed. oarweed@oarweed.com

The Art of Exercise

If you are feeling guilty after consuming those calories take a stroll on Marginal Way this 1 ¼ mile long scenic path winds it way along the rugged Maine shoreline. The walkway is dotted with benches and splendid gardens and makes for an excellent place for bird watching. The path can be crowded at certain points but you can always find a quiet place to stop and admire the view.

The Aspiring Artist

After dinner we navigated the narrow roads packed with tourist walking to Ogunquit Beach. When we arrived at the beach there was a large group already assembled at the waters edge armed with their cameras ready to snap a photo of the sun setting over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s easy to be an amateur artist when you have such a beautiful subject to photograph.
