MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
by MADELYN MILLER
Some
people think of Quebec as the festival capital of the world. Every summer
they have a comedy festival, an international summer festival, and the
Montreal international jazz festival.
For me, the hardest problem deciding which one to attend. But with skillful
scheduling, you can see them all and visit one of the most charming parts
of North America. That's what I did last year. I spent more time in Quebec
last July than I did in the United States. And I plan to do it again this
year. When anyone asks me what I am doing in July, I hardly have to check
my calendar. I know the answer is Quebec.
It
all starts in Montreal, with the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
The kickoff concert with be Manhattan Transfer with the Count Basie Orchestra
cling a special concept concert as a world exclusive. It will consist of
two part: the quartet from New York will first appear in an intimate setting,
with no more than double bass and piano for backup; in part two, a whole
different universe will be revealed when Manhattan Transfer's vocal acrobatics
are heightened by the powerful rhythms of the Count Basie Orchestra.
The
next night multitalented instrumentalist JOE LAVANO will be presenting
his CELEBRATING SINATRA, a special concert which, in the wake of an album
of the same name, pays tribute to Old Blue Eyes through an interpretation
of some of his most popular music. With a total of 14 musicians on stage--a
sextet reinforced by woodwinds and strings--the vocals will be handled by
soloist Judi Silvano.
One of the newest favorites is Canadian Diana Kroll. Few musicians or
singers have had such a rapid rise to top in the international jazz scene.
The singer-pianist first visited the Montreal International Jazz Festival
in 1995 and this year is planning a vibrant tribute to Nat "King" Cole.
With a lineup like this, jazz will shine more brightly than ever at
the 18th Montreal International Jazz Festival.
