Bandera

“The Cowboy Capital of the World”

MADELYN MILLER "the travel lady" was asked by the Dallas CBS-TV affiliate to do a show on FAMILY VACATIONS FOR FOUR FOR UNDER $1000 from  Dallas. Here is one of the possibilities:

Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of the World, is situated in the beautiful Texas Hill Country approximately 45 minutes NW of San Antonio.  Drive time from the Dallas and Fort Worth area is approximately five hours. If you take the scenic route you  will pass through the best that the Hill Country has to offer.  If not driving, the flight time from DFW is approximately 45 minutes and then a 45 minute drive to Bandera.

Not only is Bandera the Cowboy Capital of the World,  it also claims to be the Dude Ranch Capital of the World.  It has numerous ranches in the area, offering meals, accommodations, horseback riding and other activities beginning at approximately $85 per day per adult person.  Children's prices are based on the age of the child.  For example, a couple with younger children could easily stay at a ranch and have all of their activities included for less that $300 per day.  All of the ranches offer swimming pools, hiking opportunities, etc.

For those wishing an even more economical stay Bandera has many cabins in the country, and  kid friendly B&B's along the river.  Horseback riding, tubing, and other activities are readily available at a reasonable fee.  Horseback riding runs approximately $20 per hour. Also during the summer months Bandera hosts 3 rodeos weekly - Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings.  The Frontier Museum has been voted by Texas Monthly as one of the best small town museums in the state.  It offers exhibits that are kid friendly , such as  a two headed pygmy goat,  dressed fleas and western artifacts that kids can touch.

For the nature and outdoor enthusiasts Bandera has two state natural areas (Hill Country State and Lost Maples).
