“California Wine on the River” has the Midas Touch

California has long been famous for it’s rich Gold Country - also known as the Mother Lode – where its fertile soil hosts many of the state’s agricultural products.  Exquisite wines, comparable to those of Italy and France, are born in abundant vineyards amidst a mosaic of golden hills, majestic oaks and towering mountains.

In celebration of the Gold Country’s abundant treasures, The Outdoor Adventure River Specialists (O.A.R.S.) has joined its foothill neighbor the Ironstone Vineyards of Murphys for a unique outdoor excursion called California Wine on the River. This adventure is ideal for the outdoor enthusiast and wine connoisseurs alike, promising an educational, distinct and pleasurable experience.

The California Wine on the River package is set on the American River, a located in the heart of the Gold Country. The two-day trip begins at the O.A.R.S. River Bend Resort campsite, where guests will find all of the amenities needed for a positive experience, including catered dining and camping on the shores of the American River. Dinner includes food and wine prepared by the Ironstone’s executive chef, Daniel Lewis, as well as an informative discussion on the wines and the process of pairing by Steve Kautz, the president of Ironstone.

Guests are awakened the next day to a fresh breakfast, before embarking on their descent of the South Fork American River. It’s rated a Class-III Whitewater River and works well for first-time rafters, but keeps experienced paddlers on their toes, as well.  After the trip, guests may travel to the Gold Rush town of Murphys or take a tour of the Ironstone Vineyards’s historic and scenic home.

Due to an enthusiastic response from these tours, O.A.R.S. and Ironstone are also offering this excursion on Idaho’s Middle Fork Salmon. This premium Class III-IV Whitewater River cascades through alpine forests and granite walls, and is known to be wild and scenic.  Other interesting aspects include a natural hot springs, wildlife sightings and Indian pictographs. Each evening following this trip a meal is created by Daniel Lewis and paired with a variety of Ironstone’s wines, as well as vintages from Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Steve  Kautz will again make an educational presentation on the wines and pairings.
