GO FLY A KITE

Cypress Gardens Hosts World Precision Kite Tournament

Those magnificent men in their flying machines return to Cypress Gardens, a tropical theme park, as they soar over Lake Eloise for the World Precision Kite Tournament Saturday and Sunday, August 19-20.

Pilots practice Friday and judged competition starts Saturday, August 19. Contests include dropping an object to hit a target accurately, catching and releasing objects dropped from the kite and an aerial slalom course. A special target, 3 feet in diameter, is located in the show circle on Lake Eloise and designated as the landing spot at the conclusion of all events. The overall championship is determined in finals on Sunday.

A new event added to the competition last year, the Bermuda Triangle, features buoys and wires with balloons set in a triangle, which pilots must fly at great heights. The goal is to circle each buoy one time on each corner of the triangle, then repeat the task as many times as possible before landing.

Spectators really enjoy this tournament, said Brian Voisard, production manager for the Gardens. There is constant action, and the finish--watching the pilots trying to hit the target--makes it exciting up to the end of each flight.

Essential Information:

Adult admission is $31.95 (plus tax). During 2000, each single-day adult ticket purchaser may bring in one child (6-12) free. Children under 6 are always admitted free.
