THE EXUBERANT MARK MORRIS DANCE COMPANY Always popular with Titas audiences in Dallasby Madelyn Miller"Morris is one of the great choreographers of our time." -Mikhail Baryshnikov For more than 20 years, Mark Morris has been recognized as one of the most intuitive and imaginative dancers and choreographers in the world. "Morris is the Mozart of modern dance." (The Washington Post)
TITAS continues its 2000-2001 Season of Dance & Music with the return of the celebrated MARK MORRIS DANCE COMPANY, Friday & Saturday, January 26 & 27, 2001, at 8 p.m. at SMU's McFarlin Auditorium. Mark Morris studied and performed with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Eliot Feld Ballet, Hannah Kahn Dance Company, and many others. He formed Mark Morris Dance Company in 1980, and he has since created over 100 works for it, as well as choreographed dances for the San Francisco Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, American Ballet Theater, and others. Morris also founded the White Oaks Dance Project with Mikhail Baryshnikov. He has been described as "undeviating in his devotion to music" and for his "ability to conjure so many contradictory styles and emotions." The program will include: * Mosaic and United (1993): Music by Henry Cowell. Two string quartets by Cowell create a setting for a dance of contrasting colors and textures. "One of Morris' best. The dance is highly formal, but its inventiveness gives it a kind of freedom." (The Village Voice) * Dancing Honeymoon (1998): Music by Gertrude Lawrence and Jack Buchanan, transcribed and arranged by Ethan Iverson. A rollicking landscape of a dance set to songs of the 20's & 30's originally made popular by Gertrude Lawrence and Jack Buchanan. "This is vintage Morris and everybody, including the audience, has the time of their lives." (Seattle Post-Intelligencer) *The Office (1994): Music by Antonin Dvorak. This chamber-sized work set to the music of Dvorak was originally created for Zivoli, a folk dance ensemble with roots in Slavic traditions. "The Office is a masterpiece." (Ballet Review) *Grand Duo (1993): Music by Lou Harrison. A darkly mysterious and thrilling work set to Harrison's "Grand Duo for Violin and Piano". "A fierce energy eats up space in a frenzied momentum which culminates in a transcendent moment of power. Astonishing stuff."
