PEYTON PLACE STARS RETURN
FOR CAMDEN FILM FESTIVAL

In 1957, the steamy, racy and controversial New England novel, Peyton Place, was turned into a movie, which was filmed in Camden, Maine. That event, and the memories it fosters year after year for visitors from near and far, has led members of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce to plan the first annual Camden Film Festival on the weekend of May 5 through May 7.

"The general theme for the weekend is ‘Small Towns, Steamy Movies,' " said Cathy Latham, executive director of the chamber. "In fact, we're planning to show three other movies that also had tongues wagging when they were first shown." In addition to "Peyton Place," the other movies scheduled to be shown include "Picnic," starring William Holden and Kim Novak, "The Postman Always Rings Twice," with Lana Turner and John Garfield, and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman.

"We thought it would be special to invite five actors from the ‘Peyton Place' movie to join in the fun," said Latham. "So far, Russ Tamblyn and Terry Moore have confirmed they will be here. Unfortunately, Hope Lange will be unable to make it, and we're still waiting to hear from David Nelson and Barry Coe."

Of course, like any good film festival, movies won't be the only attraction during the weekend. "We've got plenty going on," said Latham, "including an opening night reception, a guided bus and walking tour of Camden locations used in the film, a ‘Prom Night Dance' just like in the movie and featuring big band music, a brunch with the stars, and a memorabilia room featuring ‘Peyton Place' information and materials."

A total of 450 badges will be sold for the festival, Latham said, and they must be purchased or reserved in advance. "The badges are $45 and will be good for the opening reception, all movies, lectures and the bus tours," she said.  Also, single movie tickets may be purchased for $5 each, as space permits.

All movies will be shown during the days and in the evenings in the beautifully restored Camden Opera House and at the Bay View Street Cinema.
