LAS BRISAS

by Madelyn Miller

Las Brisas is where I wish I had gone on my honeymoon.  The famous pink and white resort built into the natural contours of the hillside, which offers the luxury of a private or shared pool, and a private terrace surrounded by flowering bougainvillea and hibiscus.

Actually, fresh flowers are the signatures at Las Brisas. Tulipans appear everywhere: on room service trays, on bathroom towel racks, on the pillow when the bed is turned down, in vases on the night stand, on the terrace umbrella table , and floating in the private swimming pool.

The balmy breezes, which are the hotel’s namesake, brush across terraces and tennis courts to keep the hillside a comfortable 10 to 12 degrees cooler than Acapulco at sea level.

Standing on your terrace, you can see the breathtaking panoramic view of Acapulco’s Santa Lucia bay, as you feel the gentle pacific breezes waft through the lush hillside foliage.

But the natural beauty of Las Brisas is not the sole reason why many return again and again, or why the hotel was rated the number one resort by the travel guide “in world.” much of Las Brisas allure is the ambiance of relaxed elegance and exclusivity.

Established in 1954 by Spaniard Don Juan March, the hotel has hosted international celebrities from Peter Sellers to Peter Ustinov, Goldie Hawn and Sylvester Stallone, as well as European royalty, U.S. Presidents and other heads of state.

One of my favorite features is the complimentary Las Brisas breakfast—a sumptuous basket of fruit, a steaming pot of coffee, and a plate of freshly baked pastries—delivered each morning to the casita via a discreetly placed window, called the “magic box.”. You get to enjoy breakfast in unhurried comfort and privacy—in fact, you don’t even have to see your room service waiter. To me, Las Brisas seems to have perfected the art of combining tropical isolation with modern comfort.  If you want to do more than just rest and romance, Acapulco is the perfect place to resort, to sightsee, to shop, to dine and to dance until dawn.

Blessed with lush tropical surroundings, the sun shines 360 days of the year.  So if you decide to venture out from your casita, you face some tough decisions. Sailing, water skiing, scuba diving, parasailing  or deep sea fishing? Which of the five lighted tennis courts to select to improve ones’ backhand? Which beach to explore? What part of Acapulco’s legendary nightlife to experience?

Aside from sun, surf and scantily clad bodies, Acapulco’s miles of beautiful sand beaches have distinct personalities and offerings. Playa Caleta is a favorite among native and its placid waters are ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Playa Condesa, located in the heart of Acapulco bay, offers the tropical decadence of sun worshipping, bikini watching and dancing in the sand to sultry island music, performed live daily.

If you are into vistas, enjoy a spectacular view of the bay from Roqueta Island. An ancient lighthouse is a favorite vantage point from which visitors can spy glass-bottomed boats out for a view of the famous submerged virgin of Guadeloupe. This seems like the upscale version of the submarine races I used to watch from the back seat of a parked car when I was a teenager.

The Acapulcan air is heady with romance, so irresistible that most couples take one of the horse-drawn calandrias for a tour of the city. But me, just give me a pink and white jeep and a casita at Las Brisas.
