Nestled
in the Southern Rocky Mountains in Central New Mexico is one of the best kept secrets of
Southwest travel... Ruidoso. This mountain village offers an incredible variety of
entertainment for the whole family. On the same day, you can ski at beautiful Ski Apache on top of Sierra Blanca, golf at one of
the three challenging courses in town, gamble at Casino Apache at The Inn of the Mountain Gods, and enjoy
world class shopping in the huge variety of downtown shops. During the summer you
can enjoy the fast paced world of horse racing at Ruidoso Downs, home of the worlds
richest Quarter Horse Race, the All American Futurity. There's also hiking, camping,
fishing, and mountain biking if you prefer other outdoor activities.
Ruidoso is home to some world class artists and galleries as well as the famous Museum of the Horse. The summer art
festival in July features approximately 120 juried artists from a dozen states displaying
paintings, drawings, photography, glass, porcelain, woodwork, metalwork, jewelry, batik,
pottery, weaving, fabric, leather and sculpture. |
In the Fall, the leaves turn golden yellow and signal the
beginning of Aspenfest with a chili cook-off, arts & crafts fair, street vendors,
Aspenfest Parade and "Run to Ruidoso" rod run show. Also, during September
Ruidoso is host to the Golden Aspen Motorcycle
Rally when about 14,000 motorcycle enthusiasts show up to enjoy the trade show and
poker runs. Lets not forget the food. You can eat anything from French
cuisine to Barbecue in more than 50 restaurants. My personal favorites are the crab
legs at Ahna-Michelles Restaurant (way too big to fit on a plate), the Chicken Enchiladas
at Cafe Mescalero (wrapped in banana leaves and oven baked), the authentic fish and chips
at Bentley's Brew Pub (just like England), and the best calamari I've ever eaten at Che
Bellas's (ask them to start your order when you walk in). |
