Study At Oxford This Summer With UCImagine yourself at Oxford--living in a medieval college, gathering with fellow students in your tutor's rooms for class, drinking tea in the cloisters, or studying at the Bodleian Library, where scholars have worked for 450 years. This summer, UC Berkeley Extension's 30th annual Oxford/Berkeley Program will provide an opportunity to turn that fantasy into reality. Since 1969, some 4,500 people have become Oxford scholars through the program. They attend one or both of the three-week sessions offered, taking one course each session. Subjects range from "Shakespeare's Tragedies" to the "English Garden in History." This summer the sessions will be held from June 28 to July 17 and July 19 to August 7. A free orientation for prospective students and reunion of past Los Angeles area participants will be held on Monday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the Faculty Center, UCLA campus, Los Angeles. Program director Lynne Kaufman, UC Berkeley Extension, will be on hand to answer questions. Anyone interested in attending the orientation/reunion should call Shirley Beeler, 415/252-5229, ext. 19. The Oxford/Berkeley Program is offered jointly by the University of Oxford's Department for Continuing Education and UC Berkeley Extension, the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Participants in the program must have completed at least two years of college. They come from all over the United States and represent many professions and interest groups. During their stay at Oxford, participants live and study at Worcester College, which dates back to 1283. Its buildings include 14th-century cottages, a classic 18th-century dining hall and modern dormitories enclosed in the park-like setting of gardens, a lake, playing fields and grass tennis courts. Mornings are devoted to seminar meetings; afternoons are free for independent study or field trips. Evenings feature lectures by noted British scholars. Fees, which include tuition, single room, meals, lectures and receptions, are $3,550 for one three-week session and $6,500 for both. Field trips are extra. Transportation to Oxford from the United States is not included.
