TAKE OFF UP TO 100 POUNDS A DAY

 (BRITISH POUNDS, THAT IS)

DURING STAY AT 900-YEAR-OLD ENGLISH CASTLE

Travelers who may have over-indulged during the holidays can take off up to 100 pounds a day (British pounds, that is) during a stay this winter at Amberley Castle, a 900-year-old country castle hotel in southern England.

Amberley Castle is offering a special "Winter Warmer" rate of £45 per person, per night (approximately $73), for stays between now and March 31, 2000. This special price is based on two adults sharing a double room and includes a full English breakfast. The offer applies to Monday-Thursday stays only. There is no minimum stay requirement, but guests must take dinner at the Castle.

Regular prices at the Castle are £145 to £195 per room ($235-$320), per night, for two persons in a double room. Suites and four-poster bedrooms are not available at the Winter Warmer rate.

In 1103, the first buildings of Amberley Castle were built  in an idyllic site, nestled in the lee of West Sussex's lovely South Downs. For most of its 900 years, the Castle has been occupied by bishops, Royalists, dukes and other nobles. In fact, Queen Elizabeth I held the lease to the Castle between 1588 and 1603.

Now this historical castle has been transformed into an country castle hotel, the only one in the south of England. Protected by its 60-foot medieval fortified wall and great oak portcullis, the Castle's very antiquity lends a flavor of history to its elegantly appointed rooms. Each of the Castle's 15 bedrooms and five suites is furnished with antiques and fine fabrics and has its own Jacuzzi.

The Castle also has its own resident ghost, Emily, a village girl who was seduced and rejected by her ecclesiastical lover when the castle belonged to the See of Chichester during the Middle Ages. Emily threw herself off the battlements, and it's rumored that she reappears on appropriately dark and stormy nights.

The castle is located in the village of Amberley, where guests can enjoy the ancient Norman church, thatched roofs, and country pubs. Guests can also explore the Amberley Wildbrooks, the beautiful water meadows of the River Arun, preserved as a nature reserve.

During their stay, guests can also visit other Sussex castles such as Arundel, Cowdray, Lewes and more. Each guest bedroom at Amberley Castle has a book called "Castles in Sussex", which describes the castles and gives directions.

Amberley Castle is close to Chichester, a town with elegant shops and a renowned theater. The Castle is also near Brighton, a haunt of antique lovers as well as the famous Houses of Goodwood, Petworth, Parham. Jane Austen's house at Chawton is also not far from Amberley.

Amberley Castle is easily accessible from Gatwick and Heathrow Airports. London is an hour away by road, and there is direct train service from London Victoria and Gatwick to Amberley.
