Topless in Wisconsin
"A Century of Open-Air, Open-Road Touring"
Two hundred topless automobiles will spend four days (Aug.
19-22,1999) touring the scenic back roads and small towns of Northwest Wisconsin and East Central Minnesota as they officially wrap up and celebrate
the end of the "First Century of Open-Air Recreational Auto Tours".
Now in its seventh annual running, the Wisconsin Convertible Classic
(WCC) is a non-competitive tour which has become the "World's Greatest Open-Air Auto
Spectacle". Vehicles of all vintages, makes and prices will be represented; an Excalibur built and once owned by the late Wisconsin Design Master, Brook
Stevens; a Hum-Vee Convertible driven by National Guard Recruiters; a "final edition" 1976 Cadillac, a Pink Caddy memorializing Elvis, "golden age" cars
from the 50s, 60s and 70s and lots of "the New Breed" too.
The tour will begin in Eau Claire on the 19th, cruise the hills and valleys west to Hudson on the 20th, weave through the
St. Croix Valley August 21st and wind up the tour in the area on August 22nd.
A web site ( www.wiautotours.com ) has been established with photos of past tours, tour
information and registration forms. In addition a Tour Info & Registration Hot Line phone is accessible 24 hours a day at 608-271-1335. The message
runs about four minutes and offers a voice mail option to request a free registration kit listing selected hotels, offering special tour packages and
accommodations. Mail inquiries should be addressed to WSCC, Box 44781, Madison, WI 53744 , faxes to 608-236-9999 and E-mail requests should be
directed to OPENAIR@aol.com . Registration is $195.00 for car, driver and
navigator for four days of touring, receptions, designer T-shirts, games, admissions, etc. Additional passengers are $55 each.
"The automobile is one of the most enjoyable, significant and freedom enhancing inventions of the last century,"
said Gary Knowles, Co-director and Co-founder of the tour with Alex McDonell. "This past hundred
years has been the era of the motorcar, the fast getaway, the Sunday Drive, the road trip. As we approach a new century, a new Millennium, we believe
that auto enthusiasts have never before had it so good. And they may never have it this good again.
"Cars are fairly reliable, good looking, more fun to drive than ever. The highway system is in the best shape it's ever been. There are still hundreds
of miles of incredible back roads with superb scenery that literally beg you to veer off the main highway and have a look before they lose their rustic
character.
"Now is the time to gas up and go."
"The tour is open to anyone with a topless car who has a sense of adventure
and a passion for great auto touring," McDonell said. "The WCC is set-up for those fun-loving, sun-loving convertible types who want to get out, see some
scenery and BE some scenery!"
"We welcome everyone - especially those who have never done this kind of trip
before. Once they discover the pleasure of auto-touring they make it the center-piece of their summer vacation plans."
