VOYAGER OF THE IMAGINATION
Royal Caribbean International Introduces New Ships With New, Imaginative
Features
"The word ‘Voyager’ has become synonymous with
innovation, creativity and imagination in cruise ship design," said Jack
Williams, President of Royal Caribbean International. "We believe that the
Voyager-class name will clearly communicate to the public what they should
expect from Voyager of the Seas' sister ships, Explorer of the Seas and
Adventure of the Seas."
The second Voyager-class ship, Explorer of the Seas will
feature many of the exciting amenities introduced on Voyager of the Seas,
including an ice-skating rink; a rock-climbing wall; a Johnny Rockets
restaurant; the Royal Promenade shopping, dining and entertainment boulevard;
the Royal Caribbean online internet center; the largest conference facilities
at sea; and more than 15,000 square feet devoted to health and fitness.
However, she will introduce another "first" in the cruise industry,
and has a personality all of her own.
Explorer of the Seas is the first cruise ship to boast
working oceanographic and atmospheric laboratories, where research will be conducted
by the University of Miami, and other academic and governmental researchers.
Scientific research will be done on a cyclical basis involving various groups. Every
two weeks, a scientific team will rotate en route to the Caribbean. Two kiosks
with interactive displays will be available for guests to observe the
scientists at work.
Three separately themed main dining rooms will reflect
the travels of well-known explorers -- Christopher Columbus, Vasco DeGama and
Ferdinand Magellan. Maps of their journeys and art objects from their travels
will delight and educate guests.
The disco will be known as The Chamber, and is based on
a gothic castle complete with guardians of the chamber flanking the entrance,
gargoyles, and dramatic arches and columns. The Weekend Warrior sports bar will
entertain the discriminating sports fan in search of a refreshing alternative
to the archetypal sports bar filled with televisions and sports memorabilia. Divided
into distinct halves, the bar's Weekender area is for more modest recreational
activities, while the Warrior section celebrates exhilarating heroics. In
addition to high-definition plasma TV screens, standard TVs, monitors and
projection screens, Weekend Warrior will include a gyroscopic pool table for
use at sea, "The Garage," which provides a full line of interactive
gaming opportunities, and a "Folk Hero" wall showing the feats of
past and present Weekend Warriors. The Palace main theater recalls European
theaters from the fin-de-siecle period, and embodies the dramatic sophistication
of the era.
Parents and children will enjoy the Adventure Ocean
youth program, which provides "edu-tainment," or educational
entertainment. This free program blends make-believe, educational activities,
daily itineraries, ports of call, ocean and land habitats visited on each
voyage, games, individual and team sports, art, performance and a general good
time into a unique onboard experience for children, teens and parents.
Essential Information:
Explorer of the Seas will sail seven-night Eastern
Caribbean cruises, roundtrip from Miami every Saturday. The maiden voyage is
scheduled for October 28, 2000, with ports of call at Labadee, Hispaniola; San
Juan, Puerto Rico; Nassau, Bahamas, and St.Thomas, USVI. Adventure of the Seas
will debut in 2001. Letters of intent have been signed for fourth and fifth
Voyager-class vessels. The ships are due for delivery in 2002 and 2003.
