World Championship Ranch Rodeo

For the fourth consecutive year, more than 100 cowboys and cowgirls from across the U.S. and Canada will converge on Amarillo, TX, to test their skills and compete for the title world champion.

With most of the Working Ranch Cowboy Association sanctioned ranch rodeos now complete, the countdown is underway for the fourth annual WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo to be held in Amarillo, TX, Nov. 11-13, 1999 at 7 p.m. in the Amarillo Civic Center.

These cowboys and cowgirls are the real deal, earning their living from the back of a horse, tending to livestock over all kinds of terrain in all kinds of weather. The World Championship brings together a dozen ranches from across the U.S. and Canada. Each of these ranches won a regional sanctioned rodeo and now tests their mettle against the other winners. The three-night, go-round of events includes Ranch Bronc Riding, Team Doctoring, Team Penning, Wild Cow Milking, Team Branding and the Wild Horse Race.

The nine ranches already qualifying for the 1999 World Championship Ranch Rodeo include-

  • Adcock Lazy 11 Talala, OK
  • Camp Wood Cattle Co. Seligman, AZ
  • Campbell Ranch Beaver, OK
  • H Cross Cattle Co. Uniontown, KS
  • Haythorn Land & Cattle Co Arthur, NE
  • Nail Ranch Albany, TX
  • Tongue River Ranch Dumont, TX
  • Turkey Track Ranch Artesia, NM
  • Wilson/Jameson Ranches Arthur, NE

Three more ranches, from California, New Mexico and Canada, will qualify in next two weeks.

In addition to the individual and team competition for the cowboys, cowgirls and ranches, all horses participating in the World Championship Ranch Rodeo will be judged over the three performances. The highest rated horse will be named the top horse.

The highest-rated, registered American Quarter Horse participating in the World Championship Ranch Rodeo will be named "America's Top Quarter Horse," by America's Horse, a publication of the American Quarter Horse Association.

In addition to the rodeo, there is a tack and collectibles show, cowboy art show, cowboy poetry and cowboy music.

Rodeo tickets, which include admission to nearly all events, are available from the Amarillo Civic Center box office for $10, 15 or 17. Call the box office at 806-378-3096 for ticket information.

A special presentation of R. W. Hampton's stage presentation of "The Last Cowboy" is planned for Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium. This show is $5 with a rodeo ticket and $10 without a rodeo ticket.
