The Wine
Rack
By Suzanne and Parks Hall

Drinking wine is fun. But many people make it too
complicated. That’s why for more than 10 years, we’ve tried hundreds of
wines and shared what we’ve discovered with newspaper, magazine and now
Travellady.com readers. Our approach to wine tasting may not be scientific.
But it is down-to-earth. Since we believe wine and food are a natural
combination, we consider that when trying wines and make pairing suggestions
for every wine we recommend. You may not agree with all our choices. But you
can be assured that the wines we recommend, whether priced at $10 or $40,
represent good value. And speaking of prices, please remember that they can
vary from city to city and that some wines may not be available everywhere.
TOP PICK
2000
Concha Y Toro
Casillero del Diablo
Merlot
$10 - $12
2000
Concha Y Toro
Casillero del Diablo
Merlot
From Chile’s Rapel Valley, the name of this wine (Casillero
del Diablo) means “cellar of the devil.” The wine, however, is a lot closer
to heaven. This is an exceptionally good Merlot for the price. Made from 100
percent Merlot grapes, it is a beautiful dark, plumy red color. Soft in
texture, but very well structured, this medium-bodied, very flavorful wine
combines the rich tastes of black plums, bright cherries and an assortment
of berries. There’s also a nice hint of spice. The nose also is marked by
hints of spice and wood, chocolate and spice in the nose. Chewy and very
well balanced, this is a moderately dry wine that clings to the tongue and
palate. This Merlot cries out to be matched with full-flavored cheeses or
risotto and other dishes made cheese. If it’s a take-out night, pair it with
meat or bean tacos and burritos. Otherwise, match it with calves’ liver,
chili con carne, beef stew or a good steak. It even will hold up to a rich
lamb chop.
OTHER GOOD BETS THIS MONTH
2000
Pighin
Friuli
Pinto Grigio
$11 - $13
From Italy, this is a pleasant wine and softer on the
palate than other Pinot Grigios we’ve tired recently. Medium gold in color
with a grassy nose and nice brisk citrus flavors, this a great choice for
those warm evenings that are bound to linger in many parts of the country
even though the calendar says September. Pair it with mild cheese, creamy
soups and pasta and rich fish. We loved it with salmon sushi.
2000
EXP
Estate Bottled
Viognier
$12 - $14
Made by RH Phillips Vineyard, this white is
distinguished by its aromas of honeysuckle and fresh apricots. The flavor is
a lovely combination of apricots and peaches with a touch of orange. This
very versatile wine is good with just about any chicken or veal dish or a
juicy pork roast. Try it with tropical fruits for dessert.
